Great Britain

2026:

There is no general driving ban.

Exception: For the Greater London area (includes Central London and all 33 boroughs) there is a night-time driving ban for HGVs over 18 t GVW from Monday to Friday 21:00 to 07:00, as well as a weekend driving ban from Saturday 13:00 to Monday 07:00.

The entire Greater London area is designated as an environmental zone (Low Emission Zone, LEZ). For entering the LEZ with an HGV over 3.5 t GVW that does not at least meet the Euro VI (NOx and PM) standard, a daily charge of £100 is payable. For access with an HGV of a lower emission standard than Euro IV (PM), £300 is charged. Anyone wishing to drive into the central area, Central London (Ultra Low Emission Zone, ULEZ) with an HGV and not operating a vehicle of the Euro IV (NOx and PM) emission class will be additionally charged £100. Euro VI (NOx and PM) HGVs over 3.5 t GVW are exempt from the environmental charge in both the LEZ and the ULEZ.

HGVs that meet the required emission standard and are registered outside Great Britain must register with “Transport for London” by post or by email (https://lowemissionzone.tfl.gov.uk) so that they may drive in the environmental zones without paying the daily charge.

Tip: Registering a vehicle can take up to two weeks. It is therefore advisable to register for travel within the environmental zones as early as possible.

Attention: Violations of emission standards in the LEZ cost £2,000; failure to comply with the environmental conditions in the ULEZ £1,000. Those who pay the fine within 14 days receive a 50 percent discount. The LEZ is not bounded by barriers or toll booths and is monitored by fixed and mobile cameras.

Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth and Sheffield have also established environmental zones (Clean Air Zone). Only HGVs that at least meet the Euro VI emission standard may drive without restriction here. For driving with an HGV of lower emission classes, a daily charge of £50 must be paid (www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones).

Environmental zones have also been established in the city centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. HGVs that do not at least meet the Euro VI emission standard are not permitted to enter these zones. Until the end of May of this year, however, no fines will be imposed. From June, unauthorised entry will be penalised with £960. No sticker, prior notification or registration is required for Euro VI HGVs.

Since 01/10/2021, EU citizens may enter Great Britain only with a valid passport. An identity card is no longer sufficient.

Statutory and regional public holidays: 1 January, 2 January (Scotland only), 17 March (Northern Ireland only), 3 April (Good Friday), 6 April (Easter Monday – except in Scotland), 1 May, 5 May (Spring Bank Holiday), 12 July (Northern Ireland only), 3 August (Scotland only), 31 August (England, Scotland, Wales), 25/26 December.
